Sung Kang is bringing Drifter back to Toronto, this time for the automotive-themed film’s world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Kang, known to automotive enthusiasts for playing Han in the Fast & Furious franchise, wrote and directed Drifter and stars in the film. Its world premiere is scheduled for Sept. 12 at 8:45 p.m. at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, with additional TIFF screenings scheduled for Sept. 14 and 18.
The film follows a racetrack janitor with a talent for drifting who gets an opportunity to compete professionally, with the story built around racing, relationships and car culture.
Toronto already has a connection to the project. Kang appeared at the Canadian International AutoShow in February, where he shared an extended preview of Drifter and participated in a Q&A about the film and his passion for cars. The AutoShow described the independently produced project as reflecting Kang’s belief that cars can bring people together through creativity and purpose.
The film has since been selected for TIFF’s Discovery program, which includes emerging filmmakers and directorial debuts.
A separate event surrounding the premiere will also give Toronto’s automotive, film, business and creative communities an opportunity to meet Kang and members of the Drifter team. The evening will feature food and drinks, with net proceeds supporting TIFF’s Every Story Fund. Organizers say ticket availability is very limited.
