Affordability pressures are fundamentally changing how Canadians approach vehicle ownership, with consumers holding onto vehicles longer, prioritizing lower operating costs and placing greater emphasis on long-term value, according to a new market analysis from Canadian Black Book (CBB).
The report says higher financing costs, elevated living expenses and rising ownership costs have combined to make consumers more selective about replacing their vehicles. Rather than reducing demand for personal transportation, these pressures are prompting buyers to delay purchases and focus more closely on overall affordability.
CBB noted that while manufacturer incentives are gradually returning to pre-pandemic levels as inventory normalizes, they have not fully offset historically high vehicle prices and broader economic uncertainty. The company expects affordability to remain the primary factor influencing purchasing decisions as the market continues to soften.
The analysis also points to several emerging consumer trends. Buyers are placing greater importance on total cost of ownership, including fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, rather than purchase price alone. That shift continues to support demand for hybrid vehicles, which offer lower operating costs without some of the charging and infrastructure considerations associated with battery-electric vehicles.
Longer ownership cycles are also reshaping the market. Canadians are increasingly keeping their vehicles for 11 or 12 years, compared with historical ownership periods of nine or 10 years. CBB said the trend reduces the supply of late-model used vehicles, helping support used-vehicle values even as new vehicle demand moderates.
The report also notes that longer finance terms increase the importance of accurate residual value forecasting, helping dealers, lenders and consumers better manage negative equity risk while making more sustainable financing decisions.
Looking ahead, CBB said organizations with access to detailed market intelligence will be better positioned to respond as affordability pressures continue to influence buying behaviour across regions, vehicle segments and powertrains.
