This year’s Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (TADA) Annual Christmas Luncheon held on Dec. 11 was one dealers would never forget.

Canadian rock legend and founder of Max Webster, Kim Mitchell, took to the stage and played hit after hit, bringing the house down.

During the concert, Mitchell also switched from his signature, baby blue guitar to a black one featuring cut out stars. With the guitar, Mitchell played an emotional rendition of “All We are,” dedicating the song to the Shred family.

This was the guitar that Kara Shred, a 25-year-old Mississauga resident and artist, had custom-designed before she passed away in September of 2013 from an undetected congenital heart problem.

Her father, Larry Shred, executive vice-president of operations for Canadian Black Book, ended up donating his daughter’s guitar to The Guitar World in Mississauga with the request that anyone could play it.

Kara’s guitar ended up taking on a life of its own, and has now been played by celebrities such as Phil Xenidis (Phil X) who plays with Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Chris Hadfield and Alice Cooper

“I knew I wasn’t going to play it. But we didn’t want it sitting around gathering dust so we gave it to a music store,” said Larry Shred in an interview with Canadian auto dealer.

Touched by the story, the store owner posted it to the company’s Facebook page, where it gained traction.

The guitar case is also covered in autographs by the people who have played the special guitar.

“It’s really good. Sad, but good,” said Larry Shred, on seeing his daughter’s guitar in the hands of all of these people. “It was something we shared a lot. But it resolves the fear we have of it sitting. I like seeing it out there. It goes on.”
