To help educate consumers about the residual values of their vehicles after five years, Edmunds.com released its Best Retained Value Awards for 2016 in the United States, awarding Toyota and Acura top prizes.

Toyota won more model-level categories than any other carmaker with a total of five awards, and was also best overall with a projected 53.8 per cent average residual value after five years. This was the second year the Japanese carmaker stood out as the winning non-luxury brand.

The Toyota Tacoma had the highest average retained value after five years at 66 per cent, but the Avalon, Tundra, Camry and Highlander also won in their respective segments.

For a fifth consecutive year, Acura was the best luxury brand with a projected residual value of 47.6 per cent.

Honda, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz each captured three awards of the 24 handed out for each segment.

“If shoppers are deciding between competing models, we advise them to see if any of the cars on their list earned a Best Retained Value Award. This one simple step could bring them more money down the road when it’s finally time to trade in or sell the car,” said Carroll Lachnit, Consumer Advice Editor for Edmunds.com, in a written release.
