A new all-electric taxi service might help Canadians get more excited about electric vehicles.
Taxelco, a transportation holding company created by XPND Capital, has introduced Canada’s first all-electric taxi fleet in Montreal called Teo.
The new Teo taxi service will begin a three-month testing phase starting Nov. 26, 2015, before being rolled out throughout Montreal, said the company. The all-electric fleet is expected to be fully operational come mid-March 2016.
To meet consumer transportation needs, Taxelco said Montrealers will be able to choose from two types of electric taxi service, including Teo Taxi, made up of Nissan LEAF, Tesla and Kia Soul vehicles, and Teo Black, a luxury fleet of Tesla vehicles.
Customers will also have access to free Wi-Fi in all of the Teo vehicles, and will have access to phone chargers, added the company.
“It’s inspiring to see that companies such as Taxelco want to make the taxi industry more profitable as well as improving its environmental footprint by using fully electric vehicles,” said Christian Meunier, president of Nissan Canada Inc., in a written release.
“Together, we are proud to show that emission-free driving makes sense from a cost of ownership perspective, and also helps to achieve healthier and more habitable cities,” Meunier added.
