Used wholesale market nears flat

Canadian used wholesale vehicle prices were nearly flat last week as depreciation slowed significantly, according to Canadian Black Book’s latest Market Insights report.

Overall market values fell 0.05 per cent for the week ending Sept. 5, compared with a 0.20 per cent decline the previous week. The 2017-2019 average for the same week was a decline of 0.24 per cent.

Car segment prices edged up 0.01 per cent, reversing the previous week’s 0.24 per cent decline and marking their first positive weekly movement since early May. Compact car values posted the strongest increase at 0.47 per cent, followed by premium sporty cars at 0.16 per cent.

Subcompact car values declined 0.57 per cent, while mid-size cars were down 0.48 per cent.

Truck and SUV values fell 0.09 per cent, an improvement from the 0.16 per cent decline a week earlier. Subcompact crossover/SUV values jumped 1.01 per cent, the largest increase across the market, while subcompact luxury crossover/SUV values gained 0.55 per cent.

Full-size vans recorded the largest truck/SUV decline at 0.54 per cent, followed by mid-size luxury crossover/SUVs at 0.42 per cent.

CBB said monitored auction sale rates averaged 36 per cent. Auction inventory declined slightly, while demand for high-quality vehicles remained strong on both sides of the border.

On the retail side, the 14-day moving average listing price edged higher to approximately $38,500, based on about 160,000 used vehicles listed on Canadian dealer lots.

CBB also highlighted stronger Canadian new-vehicle sales in its industry news, with an estimated 168,000 units sold in August, up 5.4 per cent from a particularly weak August 2025. The result marked the third consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth.
