The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association (CVMA) has released a report marking its 100th anniversary, highlighting the history of Canada’s automotive industry and the contributions of its member companies Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
Released June 18, the report examines the industry’s evolution since the CVMA’s founding and documents the role vehicle manufacturing has played in Canada’s economy for more than a century.
According to the association, investments made by Ford, General Motors and Stellantis helped establish Canada as one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturing countries. The report points to the industry’s impact on assembly operations, parts suppliers, logistics networks, dealerships and communities across the country.
“The CVMA has stood at the centre of one of Canada’s most important industries for 100 years,” said Brian Kingston, President and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, in a statement. “This report celebrates the people, companies, and communities that have shaped Canada’s automotive industry.”
The report notes that Canada’s automotive sector has supported hundreds of thousands of jobs over the decades while contributing to economic growth and industrial development.
“CVMA members have built over 100 million vehicles in Canada,” said Kingston. “There would be no auto industry in Canada today without the contributions from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis.”
The association said the publication is intended to document the history of the industry and recognize the companies, workers and communities involved in its development. The report also underscores the long-standing connection between vehicle manufacturing and Canada’s retail automotive sector and is available through the CVMA website.
