The true cost of the chip shortage for OEMs

The semiconductor chip shortage that has impacted a number of automakers across the globe may cost OEMs US$110 billion in revenues this year — up from a previous estimate of US$61 billion, according to AlixPartners. The forecast from the consulting firm is that the crisis will impact the production of 3.9 million vehicles. Based on Mark Wakefield, co-leader of AlixPartners’ global automotive practice, OEMs are now looking at developing direct relationships with semiconductor makers.
