Porsche launched a carbon-offsetting program on May 19 in Canada to enable owners of the brand to calculate their vehicle’s CO₂ emissions, according to a news release.
Porsche Impact is not new as it was launched in 2018 in other countries, but this is the first time it is being offered in Canada.
The program also allows Porsche vehicle owners to contribute the calculated amount towards the offset of sustainability projects offered through the South Pole Darkwoods Forestry Conservation Project. South Pole is a provider of global sustainability financing solutions and services.
“Porsche Impact allows us to connect our company’s focus on innovation with the intentions of our customers,” said Marc Ouayoun, President and CEO of Porsche Cars Canada. “Having the ability to contribute towards a Canadian project offers the opportunity to support the local conservation of forests in our own backyard.”
Porsche vehicle owners that partake in the program will need to input their annual mileage and fuel consumption into the online calculator to determine their CO₂ (what they have generated). This will also help them understand the level of financial contribution that is needed to support one of four climate-related projects so that they can offset their own emissions.
The projects are: forest conservation in B.C., Canada; biodiversity in Zimbabwe, Africa; wind power in Hebei, China; or forest protection in Alaska, U.S.
“All of these projects are active in regions where there is a particularly impactful contribution to the protection of the local environment, giving Porsche owners the opportunity to play a part in supporting and improving local communities,” said Porsche Canada.
The OEM said all Porsche subsidiaries and its customers, when globally combined, have offset the equivalent of more than 46,000 tonnes of CO₂ as of April 2020.
