The Government of Canada is continuing its push for the widespread adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) across the nation, with the latest funding sent to the Yukon to raise awareness about the segment.
The $48,500 in funding for the Government of Yukon was announced on March 8 by Larry Bagnell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency), on behalf of Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.
“We are proud to support the Government of Yukon’s effort to raise awareness of zero-emission vehicles and their use in northern climates,” said Bagnell. “Investments such as this will help Yukoners make greener choices, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, bringing us closer to a zero-emission future.”
The funding is provided through Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative. It was used in part to support the Yukon’s first EV Discovery Day, held on March 8 at the Yukon Transportation Museum in Whitehorse. It included a trade show with local dealers and owners highlighting EVs as a practical option in the northern climates, and an educational exhibit at the Yukon Transportation Museum.
EV Discovery Day was organized in partnership with the Government of Yukon and the Yukon Transportation Museum. Their joint contributions helped boost the project’s total funding to $97,000. Promotional posters were also displayed at public EV charging stations, which have increased from three to 13 thanks to the funding.
The move by the government follows a string of other efforts, including the announcement of the Zero-Emissions Vehicle (iZEV) federal incentive program last year, and several other investments in research and development, and charging stations in certain provinces in Canada.
