November car sales offer sense of stability

Canadian total light vehicle sales for November 2019 settled around an estimated 143,666 units, according to Desrosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC). That’s two units short of what was achieved a year earlier.

The sales numbers for November 2019 suggest relative stability in the market, but when broken down by province, performance was mixed: Newfoundland increased sales by 15.8%, Edward Island by 13.2%, and Nova Scotia by 10.4% — all double digits.

Other provinces did not fare as well. DAC said these increases “were balanced against single digit decreases in the higher volume sales provinces such as British Columbia (-4.7%) and Quebec (-1.2%).”

In terms of vehicles, the Hyundai Elantra — a top-three contender in passenger car sales volumes — managed a 26.8% sales increase in November. It also moved up to first place among passenger cars. And within the segment, the luxury sport category increase by 6.8% during the same period.

As for trucks and SUVs, the Ram pickup moved ever closer to the top-selling Ford F-Series both in November and year-to-date, thanks to estimated increases of 27.2% and 12.1% respectively. And the subcompact SUV segment experienced an impressive increase of 56.7% for November and 28.5% overall.
