SUV and truck demand boosts average new car prices

New vehicle prices in the U.S. increased by $736 in June, and the estimated average transaction price for light vehicles was $35,511, according to Kelley Blue Book analysts.

“Helped once again by robust demand for SUVs and trucks, average transaction prices were up a solid two per cent in June 2018, said analyst Tim Fleming. “The mix of light trucks is estimated to be at 69 per cent, up from 64 per cent just one year ago.”

June was especially strong for pickup trucks, with full size truck prices rising five per cent on new models and richer trim mixes.

“The underlying strength of trucks is best represented by the mid-size truck segment, which despite no new products, saw prices climb three per cent,” said Fleming.

Despite the strength shown by SUVs and trucks, Toyota Motor Company saw transaction prices increase by three per cent, thanks to its cars. A redesigned Camry and a redesigned Avalon both posted strong numbers. The Lexus brand also increased more than three per cent.

Hyundai-Kia prices were slightly down in June, although the Kia brand rose nearly one per cent.
