Toyota will introduce flagship hybrid

June 27, 2012

Re-focusing its hybrid strategy in recent years, with Lexus models adopting the Hybrid Synergy system found in the Prius, Toyota is also placing emphasis on the technology for its own higher end cars.

The automaker recently announced that it will offer a hybrid version of the redesigned 2013 Avalon flagship sedan. Like the Lexus ES300h introduced at the New York International Auto Show back in April, the Avalon Hybrid will utilize a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and Hybrid Synergy Drive system with an electric motor and nickel-metal hydride battery pack.

Toyota says that combined, the powertrain will deliver 200 horsepower and be able to run on pure electric power up to speeds of 25 miles per hour (40 km/h). As for fuel economy, Environmental Protection Agency ratings are 40 miles per gallon (5.8-litres per 100 km) in the city and 39 (6.0 l/100 km) on the highway.

By contrast, the regular Avalon sedan (which was also unveiled at the New York show); is rated at 25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km) city and 31 mpg (7.6 l/100 km) on the highway, courtesy of its 268 horsepower 3.5-litre V6 and six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota says the Avalon Hybrid will be available in U.S. dealerships towards the end of 2012. No word yet on plans for Canada.
