The increasing complexity of today’s vehicles is driving collision repair costs higher in Quebec, even as auto theft continues to decline, according to new statistics released by the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA).
The average cost of a collision claim reached $8,638 in 2025, up from $4,083 a decade earlier. According to GAA, the increase is being driven by the growing prevalence of advanced driver assistance systems and other onboard technologies, higher parts costs, specialized labour requirements and the increasing value of modern vehicles.
For dealerships and collision repair centres, the findings highlight the increasing importance of technician training, OEM repair procedures and specialized equipment as advanced safety systems and connected technologies become standard across more vehicle lineups.
Auto theft claims fell 31.5 per cent year-over-year to 4,559 in 2025, the lowest level recorded since 2016. Dave Cavallaro, Director of Automobile Appraisal and Insurance Plans at GAA, said efforts to prevent and combat auto theft are “bearing fruit.”
“This is excellent news for consumers, because the theft of a vehicle results in significant costs that ultimately impact the entire auto insurance market,” he said in a statement.
While theft declined across Quebec, GAA noted that certain vehicle models and regions remain more vulnerable than others. The organization has published its annual rankings of the province’s most frequently stolen vehicles alongside its latest insurance statistics.
