Pathfinder Group marks 60-year partnership with NSADA

The Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association (NSADA) is celebrating its 60th anniversary and recognizing the Pathfinder Group, which has worked with the association for nearly as long, helping guide it through significant industry and public-policy challenges.

NSADA President John MacNeil highlighted the firm’s role in a client testimonial, calling Pathfinder Group an “extraordinary partner whose professionalism, integrity and commitment have helped support the success and stability” of the association for generations.

“An association does not sustain a relationship for six decades unless it is built on trust, responsiveness and a genuine understanding of its members’ needs,” said MacNeil. “Time and time again, the team at Pathfinder Group has demonstrated all of these qualities and more. They have been far more than a management provider: they have been trusted advisors, steady leaders through periods of change and an extension of the NSADA.”

MacNeil added that “much has evolved in our industry, our governance and the expectations of our members. Through every transition, Pathfinder Group has adapted with us, helping our association remain relevant, financially responsible and focused on serving members with excellence.”

John Sutherland, President of the Pathfinder Group, which he describes as Atlantic Canada’s longest-serving association management firm, said he was touched by the testimonial.

“It caught me a bit by surprise,” Sutherland told Canadian auto dealer. “All of a sudden you realize it is 60 years. Wow, how did that happen?”

Sutherland has been President of Pathfinder since September 1987 and said the years have passed quickly.

“No, it does not actually,” he said when asked whether it feels like nearly 40 years. “It’s a very vibrant industry and there’s always a thing going on more and more, so you look back and all of a sudden you realize it’s been a long time, but it doesn’t feel that long.”

Among the initiatives he cited was helping the association work with the government during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure dealerships could continue operating as an essential service.

“It was a team effort between our group, the dealers and political leadership,” said Sutherland. “Throughout that whole process, we were going through different phases, which brought with them different levels of restrictions. It was a matter of helping members deal with those measures while at the same time convincing the government that we had to keep the doors open and business had to be done. It was an interesting time.”

Patrick O’Regan, President of O’Regan’s Automotive Group, said Pathfinder has long supported both the NSADA and the Halifax Dartmouth Automobile Dealers Association, helping advance the interests of dealers while ensuring the organizations operate effectively.

He pointed to the firm’s work with provincial officials during the pandemic as a clear example of its value.

“We really worked very closely with the provincial government,” said O’Regan. “It was a combination of overture through Pathfinder and the association, but also some good long-term relationships that allowed for an open dialogue and helped achieve what was not only in the best interest of dealers in Nova Scotia but also the broader public in terms of maintaining safe, efficient levels of service.”

O’Regan also cited Pathfinder’s involvement when the Province of Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality were examining options to address traffic congestion and improve road safety.

“We were able to work with the city not just to protect the auto industry but to come up with a plan that worked best for the citizens of Halifax, while also providing opportunities for us to operate businesses efficiently,” he said.

O’Regan praised Sutherland’s ability to navigate government relations at all levels.

“I think he really stands out in terms of his ability to do so with skill, professionalism and commitment to the industry,” said O’Regan. “We’ve benefitted greatly from him. John is extraordinary at what he does.”
