Vehicle sales performance see significant shifts at model level

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants has released a list of the top selling models in 2024, with the Honda Civic slotted in the number one position for passenger cars and the Ford F-Series taking the top spot for light trucks.

Overall, DAC said new light vehicle sales performance last year was remarkably positive with the market up 8.2%. But at the model level there were significant shifts.

“The market in recent years was skewed by a combination of unprecedented forces, including severe availability issues,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC, in a statement. “Now that a degree of equilibrium has returned, consumer preferences can once more lead the market.”

For example, among passenger cars the Honda Civic reclaimed its number one ranking due to a 14.3% sales increase of 31,774 units. The Toyota Corolla claimed second place, the Hyundai Elantra third, and the Tesla Model 3 fourth. The Volkswagen Jetta experienced a noteworthy increase of 44.4% that helped propel it into fifth position, followed closely by the Nissan Sentra in sixth.

For the light trucks the Ford F-Series was well ahead. It enjoyed an 8.6% sales increase to reach 133,857 units, which DAC said is remarkably more than 100,000 units greater than the Civic. The Toyota RAV4 was up 3.8% over the previous year and slotted second, and the GMC Sierra and RAM Pickup were third and fourth, respectively. The Honda CR-V slotted fifth.

DAC also said significant double-digit sales increases boosted the Nissan Rogue into eighth place, the Ford Escape into ninth, and the Hyundai Kona into 10th as sales increased 22.8%, 58.8%, and 33.8%, respectively.
