Lithion Technologies completes first green battery plant in Québec

Lithion Technologies has announced the completion of the construction of its first commercial critical mineral extraction plant called Lithion Saint-Bruno in St-Bruno-de-Montarville — near Montréal, Qué.

The company develops, deploys, and operates technologies to recycle lithium-ion batteries and create a circular supply of their strategic materials. In a news release, they said their team worked tirelessly to build the first lithium-ion battery critical mineral extraction plant in North America’s north-east. They are now in the commissioning phase.

“It’s a major milestone towards the realization of our dream of sustainably closing the loop of battery materials. And this is just the beginning,” said Benoit Couture, President and CEO of Lithion, in a statement. “We will build more recycling plants, supplied by a network of battery collection and storage facilities, across Canada, the United States, and Europe to ensure the energy transition is a sustainable solution for the generations to come.”

At full capacity, the new plant will employ 60 people. The company said it is the first of many to be built, as the opening of a storage facility in the United States will soon follow. Discussions are also underway between Lithion and business partners to deploy plants like the new facility in St-Bruno-de-Montarville in the U.S.

Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, said in statement that the inauguration of “the first commercial plant for Québec-based Lithion Technologies strengthens our industry and opens the door to a battery circular economy in Québec.”
