Finalists named for Canadian Car of the Year Awards

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) have named the top three finalists in eight categories that are now vying for the 2017 Canadian Car of the Year crown.

The association will name the category winners from the list of finalists in early December, and then these winners compete for the coveted titles of 2017 Canadian Car of the Year, Canadian Utility of the Year, Canadian Green Car of the Year and the Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year.

The finalists are narrowed down from more than 100,000 data points gathered from test drive impressions from 90 AJAC journalists conducting more than 1,300 test drives with the vehicles that OEMs choose to enter into the annual contest.

The test drives and voting were done over four days in October at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington, Ont. where all-new or significantly updated 2017 vehicles were put through their paces on tracks designed to test their performance and simulate conditions Canadian drivers would typically experience with the vehicles.

“The benefits are twofold,” says Justin Pritchard, Canadian Car of the Year co-chair. “First, back-to-back testing brings out even subtle differences between competitors, which are reflected in the scoring results. And second, all of our results are quantified. When a vehicle wins or loses in the program, the public can see precisely why, since all of our testing and voting data is published online at”

He says the annual event isn’t simply a popularity contest among journalists. “When we declare a winner, we’ve got hundreds of thousands of data points, collected during thousands of man-hours of controlled test-drives, to back it up.”
