The hottest vehicles — for thieves

Ford trucks and expensive SUVs make up the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada, according to a list compiled by the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s (IBC).

Rick Dubin, Vice-President of Investigative Services at IBC, noted that while auto theft has declined over the last decade, it increased in 2014. Vehicle theft is up one per cent to 73,964 vehicles across Canada, with the biggest increases in British Columbia — up 29 per cent and Alberta — up two per cent.

“We also see from this list that criminals continue to have a huge demand for AWD/4WD late model high-end vehicles,” said Dubin, and added IBC and Canada Border Services Agency have recovered over $10-million in stolen vehicles at ports alone this year.

Dubin added none of the top 10 stolen vehicles are equipped with an electronic manufacturer immobilizer, making them easier to steal.

Dealers should inform customers that stolen vehicles may have a fraudulent or tampered-with VIN, and that they should have a technician check the vehicle and run a vehicle history report.
