WEINS Auto Group has broken ground on a site in Aurora that will have Hyundai and Genesis facilities built next to each other.
The 3,809-square metres facility, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2026, will replace a nearby Hyundai dealership, which Weins acquired in March 2024 and has outgrown its size.
“The Aurora Hyundai and Genesis concept will be a close duplicate to what we already built in Markham,” said Amin Tejani, Chief Operating Officer at WEINS, in an interview with Canadian auto dealer.
WEINS had already been granted a Genesis franchise – technically called Genesis Retail Experience (GRX) — and bought the land near the current Hyundai store to accommodate both brands.
Genesis currently has 19 GRX facilities built in Canada, 10 are shop-by-shop concepts and nine are standalone. The shop-by-shop concept in Aurora will be about 20 kilometres north of similar adjoining Hyundai and Genesis dealerships in Markham with a central service area in behind.
“We’re very, very thrilled to have Hyundai and Genesis in Aurora. We really wanted to expand to serve the customers better in Aurora and Newmarket. We always aim to support the communities we operate in and feel very confident of both brands,” said Tejani.
Tigran Avagyan, General Manager at Hyundai of Aurora, said they wanted some presence in the community. “We have a big customer base north of Markham for both Hyundai and Genesis.”
Eric Marshall, Director of Genesis Motor Canada, said the shop-by-shop concept and the standalone facilities are predicated on the availability of land. He said some dealers don’t have the space to do a standalone facility. The Marsim Group just officially opened a shop-by-shop concept across from Yorkdale Shopping in north Toronto.
“Usually that happens more in the metro markets, where land can be expensive and force the hand sometimes, and in other cases our partners have a lot of land and it’s not being used for anything and they propose to us the market is big enough to sustain luxury,” said Marshall. “Genesis has always been about trying to figure out ways to modernize the automotive business.”
Genesis Ajax just opened a few weeks ago as a standalone facility.
