Communauto launches FLEX service in Calgary

Quebec-based Communauto launched its free-floating car-sharing service FLEX in Calgary, Alta., on September 19 with 100 five-seat Kia Rio vehicles on day one and another 50 vehicles added soon after.

The car-sharing industry was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. To celebrate the launch, and perhaps to boost its appeal among consumers in the region amid the crisis, Communauto decided to offer all new members free 30-minute trips (or less) with its FLEX service for one month — an option known as “Unlimited Flex Pass” that it usually offers for $75.

“More than 1,000 people started the membership process even before its launch,” said Adrianna Rangeloff, Branch Manager, Communauto Calgary. “With these 150 cars, we feel, we are just beginning to provide a reliable alternative to car ownership.”

Rangeloff said the company may be able to increase the fleet and extend its operation area soon, thanks to user intentions to use the service and possible partners.

How can car-sharing services connect with consumers amid the COVID-19 pandemic? Communauto’s beta testing that was done over a period of three weeks shows cars were used 83 per cent of the time to make errands, followed recreation (13 per cent), and social outings (three per cent).

Consumers that find value in using these services to run errands rather than investing in a vehicle may lean towards these services. However, these are services that require that users rather than the company do the leg work when it comes to COVID-19 health and safety measures.

The company does offer messages on prevention and precaution, but its free-floating service means users need to implement the health and safety measures it advises.

“Our vehicles are cleaned and washed regularly,” said Communauto. “Given the nature of our service, it is impossible for us to guarantee its cleanliness between uses. Hygienic measures allowing them to be used safely are, however, within everyone’s reach.”

The company operates in various cities and offers free-floating and station-based car-sharing.
