Canadians, Americans to take road trips closer to home

Canadians and Americans are taking shorter road trips this summer as they attempt to remain closer to home.

Recent data from Turo, in which the peer-to-peer car sharing network looked at Quebecer travelling habits during Construction Holiday, the company found that COVID-19 shifted consumer travel habits which has led to a dramatic rise in domestic, car-based travel.

“This year, Turo has seen a 19 per cent (year-over-year) rise in domestic bookings in July so far in Quebec, showing that more Canadians are choosing to take trips within their own cities and provinces rather than venture to other parts of the country,” said the company. “Ontario has seen domestic trips grow 17 per cent YoY, while Canada has seen a 23 per cent growth overall.”

Similarly Generali Global Assistance (GGA)’s Future of Travel survey, conducted by Ipsos between June 5-12 and which spans 11 countries in the U.S., Europe and Asia, found that 47 per cent of Americans indicated they would be traveling domestically this summer, while only 5 per cent aim to travel outside the United States.

The study found that 73 per cent of Americans plan to go on vacation this year versus 81 per cent of Europeans. Of the Americans planning to go on vacation, 34 per cent said they would be taking a long weekend getaway for three to four days during the summer period, and 35 per cent said they would go on a week-long summer trip.

On travel, 72 per cent (the majority of American travellers) will travel by car to their post-lockdown getaway, 23 per cent will travel by plane, and 9 per cent plan to use a rental car.

“Forty-eight per cent of vacationers indicated they would rent a house or go camping within driving distance, allowing them to remain secluded during transit and avoid the crowds of unknown people found at hotels and resorts,” said Chris Carnicelli, CEO of Generali Global Assistance.

Ipsos surveyed 11,000 people for the report.
