KBB’s EV trip meant to prove EVs are reliable

Kelley Blue Book editors drove the Audi e-tron coast-to-coast across the U.S. in a continuous 3,025-mile trek that took more than 60 hours in an effort to showcase how reliable electric vehicles can be.

KBB’s Ride team drove a 2019, five-passenger Audi e-tron car that has the ability to re-charge its 95-kilowatt battery to 80 per cent in 27 minutes. Ride is a website built to help educate consumers about certain types of technology.

“Our goal wasn’t to set any land speed records,” said Michael Harley, executive editor at Kelley Blue Book, adding that they were attempting to duplicate the “Cannonball Run Challenge” with a pure EV, ensuring the drive would be carbon emission-free.

“The team intended to validate electric vehicle reliability, which the Audi e-tron commendable accomplished, and to demonstrate that a viable high-speed DC charging network — that is accessible to all EV owners — exists across the United States,” said Michael Harley, executive editor at Kelley Blue Book.

KBB’s Ride team, which included Jeff Glucker, Josh Ostrander, and Micah Muzio, took advantage of Electrify America’s charging network.

Mike Moran, head of communications at Electrify America, said the company has so far placed more than 1,650 DC fast chargers at more than 360 highway and metro locations in the U.S.

“An ease of accessibility, combined with our innovative mobile app payment process, allowed the team to effortlessly stop at regular intervals along their route for rapid charging,” said Moran.

KBB’s Ride team included three people: Jeff Glucker, Josh Ostrander, and Micah Muzio.
