As in-vehicle technologies have become increasingly sophisticated, they’ve opened up owners and manufacturers to a number of threats and risks.

There have already been cases of connected vehicles being hacked, resulting in more than a million recalled vehicles in the U.S.

That’s why Ray Boisvert, President of I-SEC Integrated Strategies (ISECIS), wants dealers to take cyber threats seriously.

The intelligence expert, who has held executive roles with The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), is one of the featured speakers at the 2016 CADA Summit. It’s a presentation bound to have dealers at the edge of their seats.

Dealers are especially vulnerable to cyber attacks because they hold lots of financial information and customer data that hackers would love to get their hands on, said Boisvert.

Part of Boisvert’s presentation will be telling CADA Summit attendees how to defend themselves from cyber threats. They are going to learn how to identify potential threats, and stay vigilant.

Boisvert will also dive into the remedies and ways dealers can mitigate cyber threats. An important part of that is what Boisvert calls “basic Internet hygiene,” which security experts say could reduce threats by 80 per cent.

“Active, defense and in-depth is something dealers will be hearing a lot,” said Boisvert.

These tips will help put dealers in a better position to fight cyber threats, but there’s no guarantee, said Boisvert. “There is no perfect defense. There is no magic solution to any of this,” said Boisvert.

One of Boisvert’s favourite quotations is by Robert Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Mueller once said: “There’s two kinds of companies out there. The ones that have been hacked — and the ones that do not know it yet.”

The fourth annual CADA Summit is expected to be a sold out event, and is supported by an exclusive sponsorship agreement from TD Auto Finance Canada. For more details or to register visit: www.cadasummit.ca
