In view of talks between Canada and South Korea over free trade, the Global Automakers of Canada, the industry association representing the interests of global automakers from Europe, Japan and Korea, has said it it encourages the Government of Canada to complete the Canada-South Korea free trade agreement, quickly followed by an agreement with Japan to create a balanced automotive market for Canadian consumers.
“The Global Automakers of Canada supports all trade liberalizing agreements whether the European Union, South Korea, and Japan,” said David Adams, President of the association.
“With the imminent completion of these negotiations with South Korea, we expect that the Government of Canada will move expeditiously to finalize a Canada/Japan EPA, to level the playing field for all vehicle distributors in the Canadian market, which will create benefits for Canadian consumers,” added Adams.
The Global Automakers of Canada has advocated for sound public policy to support a competitive and sustainable automotive market in Canada. The members are committed to meeting the mobility needs of Canadians by providing greater consumer choice, offering leading edge safety and environmental technologies and eliminating unnecessary regulatory and trade barriers.
The members of the GAC were responsible for 55.4 per cent of overall vehicle sales in 2013. The members support some 77,000 direct and indirect jobs in Canada along with 60 per cent of Canada’s 3,492 dealers across the country.
