Truck declines weigh on wholesale market

Canada’s wholesale used-vehicle market looked relatively steady last week — until you separate cars from trucks and SUVs.

Canadian Black Book said overall values declined 0.18 per cent for the week ending Sept. 19, nearly matching the previous week’s 0.19 per cent decrease and coming in below the 0.25 per cent average decline for the same week from 2017 to 2019. But underneath that relatively modest movement, car values were nearly flat at minus 0.03 per cent, while trucks and SUVs fell 0.30 per cent. Full-size crossover/SUVs recorded an even sharper 1.21 per cent decline.

The mid-size car segment recorded the largest car decline at 0.40 per cent, while luxury and compact cars each fell 0.35 per cent. Full-size cars gained 0.33 per cent, sporty cars rose 0.31 per cent and near-luxury cars increased 0.23 per cent.

Trucks and SUVs moved in the opposite direction, declining 0.30 per cent compared with 0.17 per cent the previous week. Full-size crossover/SUV values dropped 1.21 per cent, the largest decline among those segments, followed by compact vans at 0.89 per cent. Subcompact luxury crossover/SUVs posted the market’s strongest gain at 0.76 per cent, followed by subcompact crossovers at 0.38 per cent.

CBB said auction inventory has returned to “regular-high” levels, while demand for high-quality vehicles remains strong on both sides of the border. Monitored auction sale rates averaged 59.8 per cent.

On the retail side, the 14-day moving average listing price dipped slightly to $38,500, based on approximately 165,000 used vehicles listed on Canadian dealer lots.

In industry news, CBB noted that Canada’s zero-emission vehicle share reached 10.7 per cent in July, while plug-in and electric vehicle volumes increased 36 per cent year over year but did not improve from the previous month.

CBB has also opened registration for TalkAuto 2026, scheduled for Nov. 5 at Universal EventSpace in Vaughan, Ont. The annual automotive industry event will feature industry discussions, insights and networking.
