Used inventory climbs as prices stabilize

Canada’s used vehicle market entered the summer with more inventory, stable pricing and improving month-over-month transaction activity, according to CARFAX Canada’s mid-year market update released Aug. 13.

Inventory increased 15.5 per cent in June from May and was 2.5 per cent higher than a year earlier, giving consumers more selection as the summer selling season got underway. National average listing prices, meanwhile, increased just 0.2 per cent month over month and remained 4.7 per cent below June 2025 levels.

For dealers, that combination points to a used market moving further away from the supply-constrained conditions of recent years. CARFAX Canada said national listing prices have largely stabilized in 2026, with the past five months remaining in a relatively narrow range of about $31,000 to $31,500.

Transaction activity also improved in June. CARFAX Canada recorded 277,361 used vehicle transactions, up 1.3 per cent from May but down 2.9 per cent year over year. Approximately 1.49 million transactions were recorded during the first half of 2026, 4.2 per cent fewer than during the same period last year.

Used electric vehicles were one area where prices moved higher. The average EV listing price reached $42,834 in June, an increase of 1.1 per cent from May and the second consecutive monthly gain. Prices were still 1.7 per cent below their June 2025 level.

Regional differences remained substantial. British Columbia had the highest provincial average at $36,655, while Quebec was the most affordable large provincial market at $28,582. Vancouver remained Canada’s most expensive major market, with an average listing price of $44,995.
