The federal government is investing $10.9 million in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and education projects across Canada, a move that could help support EV adoption as dealers continue to expand their electrified vehicle offerings.
Announced July 30 by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the funding includes nearly $9 million through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) to install almost 400 new public chargers across nine projects. An additional $2 million will support 13 education and awareness initiatives aimed at improving Canadians’ understanding of EVs and charging.
The announcement follows the federal government’s unveiling of its new Auto Strategy earlier this year, which includes measures intended to strengthen Canada’s vehicle electrification and battery supply chain while expanding charging infrastructure nationwide.
British Columbia continues to lead the country in charging deployment. According to the federal government, the province now has more than 8,900 public charging ports, an increase of 87 per cent since 2023.
Environment and Climate Change Canada said the projects are intended to make EV ownership more accessible for consumers and businesses while supporting Canada’s transition to lower-emission transportation.
Among the funded initiatives is a project led by the Canadian Charging Infrastructure Council to develop practical guidance for condominium boards, property managers and landlords on installing EV charging infrastructure in multi-unit residential buildings, one of the most significant barriers facing many prospective EV owners.
Electric Mobility Canada also received funding for two national initiatives: one to establish regional charging resource hubs for light-duty fleets in the Prairies and Atlantic Canada, and another to advance vehicle-grid integration through collaboration among utilities, automakers, regulators and policymakers.
The federal government said the investments complement broader efforts to expand Canada’s charging network, support clean electricity and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in vehicle electrification.
