Canada, U.S. to host global safety conference in Toronto

Canada and the United States will co-host a global vehicle safety conference in Toronto next month, bringing together industry and government leaders to advance new safety technologies.

Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will host the 28th International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) from May 12 to 15 at Exhibition Place.

“Canada is proud to welcome the global road safety community to Toronto for Enhanced Safety of Vehicles 2026,” said Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon in a statement. “By bringing together researchers, regulators, and industry leaders, we are fostering innovation and cooperation that will shape the next generation of vehicle safety.”

The conference will focus on emerging safety technologies and evidence-based approaches to reducing road fatalities and serious injuries. Organizers said the event comes as global road safety remains a pressing issue, with nearly 1.2 million deaths each year linked to crashes.

The conference will feature discussions on crashworthiness, crash avoidance, automated driving systems, cybersecurity and data-driven research. Programming will include technical sessions, demonstrations and expert panels focused on emerging risks and future safety standards.

“NHTSA is committed to enhancing public safety on our roads and ESV continues to be at the forefront of technological innovation,” said Jonathan Morrison, Administrator of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in a statement.

The biennial event has been held since 1970 and rotates among host countries in North America, Europe and Asia. Attendees include government officials, automakers, suppliers, researchers and policy experts.
