Rivian teamed up with Laval-based construction company Montoni Group for a groundbreaking ceremony on July 16 that marked the official start of construction of the new service centre in Quebec. The facility is also an important step for Rivian as it aims to expand its Canadian operations.
The event was held in Laval and attended by the city’s mayor, Stéphane Boyer. The American EV maker said the service centre also addresses the need for a permanent service point that is both accessible and conveniently located for Quebec drivers. Rivian was initially serving customers in a temporary service centre in the Town of Mount Royal; the one in Laval with be its permanent centre.
“The Greater Montreal Area is critical to our service footprint across Canada,” said Nick Harterre, Policy Manager at Rivian, in a statement. “This new service, delivery and demo centre will allow us to provide robust support to Rivian owners in Quebec, while allowing even more prospective customers to experience our class-defining electric vehicles.”
The new service centre covers more than 28,000 square feet. Rivian said it will be built to stringent environmental standards (aiming for LEED v4 certification), and that it will use low-carbon materials and include EV charging stations.
The project arrives at the lead-up to the launch of Rivian’s new R2 compact SUV model that will debut in Canada next year. The company is expanding its service network to support its growth, and is doing so through physical centres and mobile vehicles that will serve customers directly.
