Eleven people residing in Quebec were arrested as part of an investigation called Project Carbon, an initiative targeting organized auto theft in the Durham Region in Ontario.
The suspects in Quebec travelled to Durham Region, stole vehicles, and then transported them back to La Belle Province, according to a Durham Regional Police news update. They were originally arrested in March without incident.
“Since day one, we have supported law enforcement with the resources they need to take down dangerous criminals,” said Zee Hamid, Associate Solicitor General for Auto Theft and Bail Reform and representative of the electoral district of Milton in Ontario, in a statement.
Investigators found and seized equipment used to steal vehicles, Canadian currency, cocaine, and recovered two stolen vehicles. However, the police update notes that 20 vehicles have now been recovered, with 18 outstanding.
“Project Carbon is proof that our investments are working,” he continued. “Thanks to the Preventing Auto Theft Grant, officers successfully dismantled a major criminal operation, recovered stolen vehicles, and delivered justice.”
Ontario’s Preventing Auto Theft Grant program is designed to support new and more intense crime-fighting measures. The police update said eight suspects are facing charges of Fail to Comply, having already been arrested and released before — but failed to adhere to certain rules and restrictions.
The Durham Regional Police said all suspects were held for bail hearings. As it stands, warrants have been issued for the arrest of four of the suspects.
