The Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario has highlighted key advocacy achievements, including the success of the Digital Dealer Registration program, that were featured in the province’s 2024 Burden Reduction Report released during Red Tape Awareness Week.
The report highlights upgrades to the Digital Dealer Registration program that allows automotive retailers to provide vehicle registration, permits, and licence plates online from their dealership. The MVRO said more than 24,000 transactions have been completed so far using DDR, while participating dealerships reported saving at least four hours per month.
In a statement Frank Notte, MVRO’s Director of Government Relations, said the MVRO is proud to contribute ideas to the provincial government and Mike Harris, Minister of Red Tape Reduction, to “help car buyers and auto retailers save time and money.” He said they “understand that a strong auto retail sector drives economic growth and provides thousands of well-paying careers at new car and truck dealerships.”
The report also highlights amendments to modernize the Motor Vehicle Dealers and becoming the first jurisdiction in North America to provide automatic vehicle permit renewals — which occurs automatically 90 days before expiry. The MVRO said the move saves around four million vehicle owners over one million hours, “worth an estimated $40 million per year,” and approximately “264,000 impacted businesses 219,000 hours, worth an estimated $7.54 million per year.”
The redesigning of the Ontario Tool Grant’s digital eligibility notice for apprentices, meant to support the next generation of auto technicians, was also included in the report. The new eligibility notice has been simplified and personalized, and provides clear information about the grant and application process.
“These meaningful and impactful measures help auto retailers and consumers save two important commodities — time and money,” said Notte.
