Quebec sees boost in ZEV sales in advance of reduced incentives

Sales of zero-emission vehicles in Quebec have surged as the province plans to soon reduce incentives before doing away with them completely, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants’ latest provincial sales update for November 2024.

They described it as a strong month for new light vehicle sales in Canada, particularly as Quebec experienced a 16.4% sales increase in November — coming from an equally strong October. In comparison, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia saw new light vehicle sales slip 2.9% and 0.6%, respectively, compared to a year earlier. And Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta managed single digit growth at 8.6%, 7.2% and 2.4%, respectively.

Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC, said the surge in ZEV sales in Quebec due to soon-to-be-reduced provincial incentives boosted that market substantially. “Indeed more than 100 per cent of the 5,600 unit increase in sales in Quebec were ZEV gains, with ICE vehicle sales actually declining in the province in November.”

DAC said total new light vehicle sales for November was up 8.8% above year-ago figures, having reached an estimated 156,000 units sold. Year-to-date, the market as estimated by DAC reached 1.72 million units sold, an increase of 8.3% over the same period last year.
