Time to market winter tires and demystify installation myths

CAA-Québec recently released an update reminding its readers about the winter tire deadlines in certain provinces — something dealers across the country, whether the tires are mandatory or highly recommended, are likely marketing as the weather turns cold.

The association’s update reminds readers that booking early to have their tires changed means avoiding a fine (in Québec, for example), and allows for access to more inventory. They also sought to demystify the installation of winter tires, noting that the myth around the perfect timing to change tires (when the mercury hovers around 7°C for several days in a row) is not true.

“It’s not true that installing them early in the fall will damage them; it takes several hundred kilometres travelling at high temperatures to cause premature wear,” said CAA-Québec in its update — a myth that dealers may also seek to clarify with their customers.

They also recommended that consumers speak to an expert about durability, traction in deep snow, grip on ice, and resistance to aquaplaning, as each vehicle model has its own characteristics. They highlight taking the time to select the right winter tire.

“For example, a high-end ‘ice and snow’ tire is particularly good for driving in the city, where black ice often covers road surfaces that appear to be clear,” said CAA-Québec. “Snow tires with studs might be more suitable for the country.”

Whatever the case, dealers are in for a busy season as we enter the halfway mark of October and calls for appointments are bound to come in soon.
