The Conestoga College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning teamed up with Skills Ontario to launch a week-long skilled trades camp in Guelph from Aug. 12-16.
Currently underway, the goal is to introduce students entering Grades 7 to 9 to careers in the skilled trades in areas that include welding, truck and coach, automotive service, and heavy duty equipment. The camp features hands-on activities and learning meant to help participants develop communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
“We are in the midst of a labour shortage in the skilled trades industries and it is integral that we create pathways to introduce youth to the exciting opportunities that these professions can offer,” said Nadine McPhee, Women’s Initiatives Liaison Officer for Engineering, Technology & Trades and Apprenticeship at Conestoga College, in a statement.
She added that the camp will provide youth with firsthand experience and a deeper understanding of these important fields, which she said will help to inspire and prepare the next generation of skilled professionals.
A report from Employment and Social Development Canada reveals more than 700,000 skilled trades workers are set to retire between 2019-2028, leaving a noteworthy gap in the workforce that is bound to impact various industries. In a news release, Conestoga said the college, along with Skills Ontario, hope to address this impending shortage by engaging campers early and providing them with hands-on experience.
The summer camp program first launched in 2011 and now includes 28 camps throughout the province of Ontario — including Brampton, Toronto, Sudbury, Brantford, Thunder Bay, Kingston, Cambridge, Bracebridge, Ottawa, Windsor, and more. The one in Guelph is currently taking place at 460 Speedvale Avenue West.
