2023 sales per dealership franchise rose since pandemic

Last year sales per dealership franchise rose to the highest level since the start of the pandemic, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

In a recent update, DAC described the 2023 new light vehicle market in Canada as having experienced consistent year-over-year sales increases. During this period, dealer franchise counts were mostly stable when compared to 2022, and sales per dealer franchise within the Canadian market enjoyed significant growth.

“For 2023, this figure reached 448 units compared to 401 units in 2022,” said DAC in its market update. “Pre-pandemic, in 2019, average sales per dealer franchise reached 517 units. While the market has room to recover still, 2023 nonetheless represents the highest average count since the start of the pandemic.”

Narrowing in on specific brands, DAC noted that Toyota took the top spot with its average sales per dealer franchise figure reaching 795 for the year. In the luxury market, the top spot went to Lexus, which was second overall, with average sales per dealer franchise sitting at 780 units. Audi followed at 702 units, BMW managed 620, and Mercedes-Benz reached 609. Subaru was a little behind the top five crowd with 579.

“With the new light vehicle sales recovery visibly picking up steam, dealer franchises have seen their individual unit sales results improve notably,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC, in a statement “It will be interesting to track how things develop in 2024, along with the equally important margin per unit.”
