Honda Canada Mfg. invests $1.38B to upgrade ON plants for zero-emission goal

Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM), which is part of Honda Canada, will invest $1.38 billion over six years to upgrade its Alliston, Ont., manufacturing plants as part of the OEM’s goal to reach zero emissions by 2040.

The investment is meant to help establish HCM as a global leader in hybrid electric vehicle production. The company is partnering with both the federal government and the government of Ontario, with each providing a (conditional) contribution of $131.6 million.

“This investment not only ensures our product and manufacturing competitiveness within Ontario, Canada and abroad, but also significantly bolsters our ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help Canada attain its overall climate targets,” said Jean Marc Leclerc, President and CEO of Honda Canada.

The manufacturing plants will include new technologies, processes, supply chain, and vehicle research and development programs. Enhanced job training initiatives and more inclusive hiring practices are also part of the shift. The OEM also said that retooling both production lines will give way to thousands of high-quality jobs in Alliston and throughout the OEM’s Canadian supplier network.

HCM is able to annually produce more than 400,000 vehicles and 190,000 engines. Honda said its new hybrid products will lower GHGs by 30 per cent, when compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

“Today, we’re investing in workers, in communities, and in our future. Building hybrid-electrics will support thousands of good jobs here in Alliston and grow the economy, all while cutting pollution and keeping our air clean. By helping Canadians build—and then drive—cleaner vehicles, we’re delivering on our plan to build a better future for all,” said Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, said he was pleased Honda made the investment in Ontario. “We are home to the most skilled workers anywhere in the world, we have all the necessary natural resources, and we have created the best environment for jobs to grow and businesses to flourish,” he said.
