Toyota Canada Foundation to fund BBPA scholarships for Black students

The Toyota Canada Foundation will fund scholarships for Black students pursuing post-secondary education in a Canadian automotive technology program, according to a November 22 announcement from the automaker.

Recipients of the Toyota Canada Foundation scholarship will be selected and awarded by the Black Business and Professional Association’s (BBPA) National Scholarship Program—which was established in 1986 to lower the Black student drop-out rate.

“It is truly an inspiration to witness the hard work, determination and sheer talent of our scholarship recipients,” said Nadine Spencer, President and CEO of the BBPA. “Over 1,100 outstanding students applied and while we wish we were able to award them all scholarships, these recipients represent a brighter future for our community and generations to come.”

Over the next two years the association will select six Black students that will receive a Toyota Canada Foundation scholarship of $5,000 per year, for two years, for a total of $10,000.

Leslie Miller, Treasurer of the Toyota Canada Foundation, said the foundation is proud to be able to help some students “take the next step in their education and career” by working with the BBPA’s National Scholarship program to provide financial support for Black students interested in automotive technology.

The next application deadline for the scholarship is Summer 2022. More information can be found here.

In other news, the Toyota Canada Foundation will also fund scholarships for Indigenous students pursuing post-secondary education in automotive technology.

The recipients will be selected and awarded by Indspire’s Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries, Scholarships and Awards program. That program allows First Nations, Inuit and Métis students to pursue post-secondary education and overcome financial barriers.

The next application deadline for the scholarships is February 1, 2022. More information can be found here.
