MADD Canada has launched its Project Red Ribbon campaign to promote sober driving during the holiday season.
The launch of the campaign is done in connection with MADD Canada’s Chapters and Community Leaders, and runs from November 2, 2020 to January 4, 2021.
Red ribbons and red ribbon car decals are handed out to the public to display as a symbol of their commitment to sober driving, while serving as a tribute to victims killed or injured during collisions involving alcohol and/or drugs.
“While the usual holiday gatherings and celebrations may be different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the risk for impaired driving remains,” said Jaymie-Lyne Hancock, National President of MADD Canada. “Our red ribbons serve as a reminder to everyone that if you are going to be consuming alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, plan ahead for a sober ride home.”
Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, also offered a few words during the campaign launch, noting that the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be fatal.
“Today, we stand together to remember and honour the victims and survivors of impaired driving,” said Blair. “Every Canadian driver is responsible for doing their part in keeping our roads safe.”
In-person events and activities are limited this year due to the pandemic, but MADD Canada volunteers will be out in their community distributing red ribbons, and participating in check stops and other events.
Depending on the health and safety guidelines of the community, volunteers may also distribute ribbons by mail and through participating retailers. And there will be activities on social media to help spread the message about driving sober.
