The Canadian automotive sector has contributed to an increase in retail sales, which rose across the country by 18.7 per cent in May. According to Statistics Canada, retail sales increased to $41.8 billion. Excluding the automotive sector, the sales increase would be just 10.6 per cent. Vehicle and parts dealers were one of the main contributors to the surge, as “motor vehicle and parts dealer sales soared 66 per cent, up for the first time in three months to nearly $8.5 billion,” the Ottawa Business Journal reports.
