Concerns about COVID-19 and intriguing discounts on cars are motivating 33% of consumers in the U.S. to buy a vehicle during the nation’s upcoming Memorial Day weekend, according to a recent survey from Cars.com.
Of that number, 53% are looking for something newer, (35%) are interested in the current deals, and (21%) need a replacement vehicle. These are the three main motivators for shoppers.
“Americans love the freedom and safety that personal car ownership provides, especially in the current environment,” said Jenni Newman, editor-in-chief at Cars.com “We are seeing more people considering purchasing a car to use as an extension of their home, a much-needed escape and safe mode of transportation.”
She said the good news is that consumers no longer have to leave their home to buy a vehicle, as thousands of dealerships across the U.S. have adopted digital buying practices — including virtual test drives, online appointments, and home delivery options.
The survey also reveals that 64% of consumers will not be travelling during the holiday weekend due to the novel coronavirus, but that 36% still plan to take a trip. And of those that plan to travel, 75% will travel by car and take a short road trip of about 100 miles (approx. 161 km) or less.
