China gathers auto experts for WNEVC 2019

The World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC 2019) is set to launch in July in Boao, Hainan Province, China, and the global automotive industry should pay attention when it does.

The event, held between July 1-3, 2019, is hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the People’s Government of Hainan Province. It will focus on the “transformation and upgrading” of the auto industry and its ecological/environment improvement.

“The three-day event is expected to bring over 1,200 delegates from around the world, including domestic and foreign government officials, industry experts and scholars, and global business leaders,” said the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China SAE), who organized the WNEVC.

Some of the confirmed speakers include Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO, Volkswagen Group; Hubertus Troska, Chairman and CEO of Daimler Greater China; Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG with responsibility for Development; and Sakamoto Hideyuki, President of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, and Executive Vice President of Nissan Motor.

Christian Zinglersen, Head of Clean Energy Ministerial Secretariat (CEM); Jochen Goller, President & CEO of BMW Group Region China; and Lee Hyuk Joon, General Manager of Hyundai Motor Group (China) are also among the list of speakers set to appear at the event.

The theme of the congress is “New Era, New Revolution and New Industry.” It’s expected to highlight the integrated development of electrification, intelligence, and shared mobility around areas like autos, energy, transport, information and communication, and the application scenarios of smart cities.

The event is also considered very important for China’s image and status on the global playing field. “It is an important demonstration platform for China to fulfill its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change and publicize its achievements in low-carbon and green development to the world,” said China SAE.

This is particularly the case with regard to the nation’s push for new electric vehicles (NEVs).
