Mitsubishi iMiEV recalled

August 8, 2012

Mitsubishi Motor Sales Canada is recalling 49 examples of the 2012 iMiEV pure electric vehicle. The move follows a bulletin issued by Transport Canada highlighting a potential defect with the car’s safety restraint system. The problem lies with sensors that aren’t compatible with self-diagnostic software for the vehicle’s Safety Restraint System.

As a result, the SRS warning lamp can come on and if the problem isn’t addressed, the car’s inflatable roof curtain and side impact air bags could fail to deploy during an accident, increasing the risk of injury to occupants in the event of a crash. Mitsubishi has said that it will contact the owners of the affected cars and dealers will replace the incompatible sensors with new ones free of charge.

The Mitsubishi iMiEV is the company’s first production all-electric vehicle to be launched in Canada and went on sale last year. Like its U.S. counterpart it is wider than the European and Japanese market version, in an effort to better appeal to North American tastes.
