Second largest U.S. automaker forecasting 50% rise in sales

Ford Motor Company walked up to the plate and pointed, Babe Ruth style, to its lofty sales goals for 2015.

According to Ford, global sales will rise 50% by 2015, to 8 million vehicles.

John Stoll, a spokesperson for the automaker, says that by 2020, 55% of vehicle sales will be small cars sales. Additionally, a third of all sales will be in Asia.

Q1 Earnings and growth

The automaker has earned $9.28 billion in the past two years, after losing $30.1 billion from 2006-2008.

So far, new models like the redesigned Ford Explorer and redesigned Ford Focus have been commanding higher prices, helping the automaker boost its Q1 earnings. The automaker saw a 22% boost in first quarter earnings, earning US $2.55 billion –the strongest first quarter for the automaker since 1998.
