After a tumultuous year for automotive sales (April saw a decline of 75% and September was the best-selling month of 2020), there were some areas of the Canadian auto market that remained unchanged — such as the top year-end selling vehicles for 2020.
“With instability everywhere some constants remained in the Canadian automotive market,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC). “Even with chaos abound, the Ford F-Series and Honda Civic remained firmly placed as the leaders of their respective branches of the automotive market.”
The top three selling vehicles last year among both passenger cars and light trucks were familiar sights, according to DAC. The Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup series, and Toyota RAV4 led the light trucks; the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Elantra remained leaders among passenger cars.
“Nearly all the leading models noted sales decreases for the year with the sole exception of the Hyundai Kona and its 3.2% sales increase, cementing the model in seventh place among light trucks,” said DAC, adding that “The fourth quarter brought with it some variety.”
In Q4, the Chevrolet Silverado, which increased its sales by 24.0%, pulled ahead of the Toyota RAV4 to become the third-place light truck. Among passenger cars, the Kia Forte, which experienced a sales growth of 19.2% in Q4, managed to narrow the gap between itself and the third-place Hyundai Elantra.
