Feds invest $1.2M in Smart Grid Nova Scotia Project

Nova Scotia is among the latest locations to benefit from federal government funding in the form of a $1,119,000 investment meant to expand electrification projects in the area.

The funding will help Nova Scotia Power establish energy solutions for an electric vehicle (EV) smart grid–integrated system.

“As the Canadian economy recovers and we build back better, we are investing in innovative clean energy projects to create good, middle-class jobs, increase competitiveness and reduce pollution,” said Andy Fillmore Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Halifax, during the announcement.

He said the investment in the Smart Grid Nova Scotia Project will help the federal government achieve a clean energy future.

The pilot project is expected to demonstrate and assess smart charging EV solutions and technologies so it can be potentially used to make more efficient use of renewable power sources, in addition to helping reduce the demand on current electricity infrastructure like power lines. It will allow EVs to store and discharge electricity during peak times, easing pressure on the grid. Up to 200 participants will be recruited for the project to help inform the demonstration.

Project funding was provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Green Infrastructure – Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Demonstration program.
