Dealers focus on HR management

The need to provide consistent and transparent communications to employees is an important factor to boost engagement and professionalism within the dealership culture, according to Roadsport Auto Group.

“It also reduces risks around the dealership’s due diligence obligations for abiding by legislation such as the Employment Standards Act (ESA),” said the group’s Dealer Principal, Chris Gauthier.

The company uses CADA 360’s HR Automation program — an integrated HR tool that takes several manual processes and activities and then automates them. The tool was launched in March 2018.

Both Gauthier and Roadsport Auto Group’s Manager of Human Resources, Roger Baguley, identified four key factors in their decision to automate their HR processes. Employee engagement and transparency was among the factors, as it can help improve communication between managers and employees by ensuring they’re equipped with information ahead of meetings.

Other factors include the move to centralized data for easy monitoring and access to multiple stores, and payroll cost savings to help resolve potential employee disputes and more accurately manage staff time-keeping.

Gauthier also said the program provides peace-of-mind, as he no longer has to manually track things like probation end dates, license expirations, and other HR and compliance events. “Comprehensive, efficient policy and documentation delivery minimizes the dealership’s exposure to risk.”

New processes and systems can take time and effort when first implemented, and dealers may seek to understand what their return on investment is. But Gauthier says you can’t identify what those costs would be if you don’t have preventative measures in place. “The best decision is to prepare for and minimize (the) risk (rather) than manage problems after that fact.”
