A new partnership between GM and U.S. rideshare provider, Lyft, is a clear sign the automaker is moving away from its traditional ownership model.

GM has invested a whopping $500-million in its partnership with Lyft to create an “integrated network of on-demand autonomous vehicles” in the U.S.

The automaker has been working on developing autonomous technologies for about a decade, and said this partnership will help bring autonomous vehicles to the streets more quickly.

“We see the future of personal mobility as connected, seamless and autonomous,” said Dan Ammann, President of GM, in a written release.

“With GM and Lyft working together, we believe we can successfully implement this vision more rapidly.”

“Working with GM, Lyft will continue to unlock new transportation experiences that bring positive change to our daily lives. Together we will build a better future by redefining traditional car ownership,” said John Zimmer, president and co-founder of Lyft.

GM said it will also hold a seat on Lyft’s board of directors, and it will become the preferred provider of short-term use vehicles for Lyft drivers.
