A new oil technology could have a big impact on oil changes at dealerships in the near future.
Lubricants manufacturer Castrol has launched Nexcel, a new oil cell that is said to improve engine performance, servicing and sustainability.
Castrol said vehicles fitted with Nexcel can have their oil changed in around 90 seconds —more than 13 times faster than a conventional oil change. The company added this provides a more flexible and convenient service option for customers.
Nexcel oil cells can also be collected after use, avoiding wastage of used oil, and they can be re-defined back into high quality lubricants, said Castrol.
The technology can also reduce carbon dioxide emissions on modern engines and can pave the way for a new generation of precision-engineered engine oils, said Castrol.
It added Nexcel has been tested on a range of engines from very small city cars to high-powered racing vehicles in extreme conditions, with oil flow tested up to 600 litres a minute. That’s 10 to 20 times greater than seen in a conventional passenger car engine, said Castrol.
Right now, the oil technology will only be standard on the new Aston Martin Vulcan, a track-only supercar, said the company.
But Castrol said that road-going vehicles fitted with Nexcel are expected to go into production within five years. The company added it is in discussions with several other vehicle manufacturers.
