Toyota once again retained its crown as the top winner in the annual Canadian Black Book ”Best Retained Value” awards, bringing home six awards, which recognize the vehicles that depreciate the least.
For the sixth consecutive year, Toyota’s Tundra pick-and Tacoma up trucks took top honours in the Full-Size and Small Pickup categories, respectively.
Another repeat winner, the Jeep Wrangler won the retained value for the whole industry, also taking first place in the Compact SUV category for a fifth consecutive year.
“We think it’s great to look back — to look forward,” said Josh Bailey, vice-president, Research & Editorial, Canadian Black Book, in a presentation that kicked off Media Preview Day at the 2015 Canadian International AutoShow (CIAS) in Toronto.

While CIAS focuses mostly on new and concept cars, Canadian Black Book’s awards are part of a campaign to encourage car buyers to ‘Appreciate Depreciation’ and take a step back to look at what a vehicle’s value will likely be four or five years down the road.
“We wanted to make sure that Canadian dealers, Canadian consumers and the whole industry had access to that information,” said Bailey. “We didn’t want it to be restricted to any one party.”
Every January, Bailey says award winners are chosen based on vehicles that retain the highest percentage of their original MSRP after four years, spanning over 20 categories.
The Lexus CT200 marks the first time a luxury hybrid showed up on the winner’s list.
Also new this year, Canadian Black Book decided to introduce the compact commercial van to its categories, an award won by the Ford Transit Connect.
“We thought it was time we introduced a new segment to address those vehicles coming into the market,” said Bailey.
By releasing these award winners, Bailey hopes consumers — particularly Canadian buyers — will make more informed buying choices.
“When people are shopping for a new car, this list should give them some comfort that they’re looking for a car that doesn’t depreciate a lot. And this is a good selection of vehicles that you might consider.”
